The company we keep helps shape our expressions

Embracing time among trees is never wasted," as wisely stated by Katrina Mayer. In a similar vein, friends can be likened to trees in our lives—providing clarity, offering shelter, and occasionally dropping a leaf on our heads to prompt a reevaluation of our thoughts and perspectives. Just as trees enrich our surroundings, friends contribute to the landscape of our experiences, making every moment spent with them meaningful and growth oriented.

I find myself embedded in a tight-knit sisterhood, and when I reflect on my closest friendships, the term “friend” often seems inadequate. The essence of these relationships goes beyond mere friendship; it’s a sisterhood. Though we may not share blood, we share life and confide in each other, unraveling our deepest thoughts, fears, and desires. In doing so, they become acquainted with the pages of my heart and life, revealing aspects that even those closely associated with me may not know. Imperfections bind us together, creating a profound connection.
Recently, I had the privilege of reuniting with these incredible women. It struck me how the language we use encapsulates our experiences and reflects our worldview. During a conversation on the mountain, I unintentionally used the term “competition” instead of “inspiration” to describe certain aspects of my relationships. I was discussing challenges and observations, but the words I chose painted a misleading picture. Reflecting on this later, I realized the impact language can have on our perceptions.
The choice of words can either benefit us or lead us down a dark path. Using the term “competition” can strain relationships, whereas “inspiration” speaks to a driving force that motivates others. I recalled an interview where someone explained their acceptance of a negative situation by saying, “I did not think it was that bad.” Oprah rightly pointed out that it’s always about us, and accepting abuse for example gives permission to the abuser to do to us what we already think of ourselves. If one speaks to you in an abusive manner and you accept it is because a part of you already believes that you deserve to be treated that way. This extends beyond abusive relationships; it encompasses our self-perception and the need to empty ourselves of harmful beliefs.
Language shapes our worldviews and experiences. Viewing others as competitors or sources of inspiration is influenced by the language we’ve heard and internalized. Recognizing the power of language, we must choose our words carefully, allowing them to reflect our genuine experiences and foster positive connections.
With love
