Observe, don’t absorb

One of the bravest things I have learned to do this year is detach.

I have always been someone who feels deeply. I absorb pain. I feel what others feel, sometimes so deeply that their experience becomes my own. I can walk alongside someone through their pain, help them carry it, pray with them, and somehow, when they have crossed to the other side, I am still standing there with what they left behind.

But I am learning something: I can love people without carrying everything they carry.

Sometimes the healthiest thing I can do is step back and observe rather than absorb. To watch someone’s life like a movie does not mean I don’t care about the characters. It means I have remembered that I am not the character in every story.

Close proximity can make us emotionally entangled. We see everything. We know everything. We feel everything. And before we realise it, someone else’s disappointment becomes our disappointment, their anxiety becomes our anxiety, their conflict becomes our conflict, and their season begins to occupy our spirit.

So I am learning to create space.

Not because I have become selfish.

Not because I no longer care.

Not because I have stopped loving people.

Simply because I finally understand that I cannot pour from a cup that is constantly being filled with everyone else’s pain, confusion and disorientation.

I can observe. I can pray. I can encourage. I can show up when I am genuinely called to.

I can love people deeply and still say, “This is yours to carry, not mine.”

There is freedom in allowing people to live their lives without making their experiences your emotional responsibility and so, this season, I am leaning into God for wisdom, discernment and strategies for loving people without losing myself in their stories or even their lives.

Maybe this is your reminder too:

You don’t have to absorb everything you are sensitive enough to feel.

You can be compassionate without becoming consumed.

You can be present without becoming entangled.

You can love without rescuing.

You can care without carrying.

You can pray without taking responsibility for the outcome.

Observe, don’t absorb.

Sometimes the greatest gift you can give yourself and the people you love is the freedom to remain exactly where God has placed you grounded, whole, and right here.

Love Nele
